Program Description

The objective of the German Pfizer Young Investigator´s Fellowship is to encourage basic and clinical research in the field of growth hormone and growth factors and to foster the scientific exchange between Germany and other European countries. It was first awarded in 2004. Every year, a Europe based institution with special expertise in the field of growth hormone and growth factor research offers a 6-months fellowship position to young investigators, who have demonstrated their interest and ability in the field of basic or clinical endocrinology. The host institute proposes one or two projects for which the candidates can apply. The fellowship will be awarded annually with the sum of EUR 15,000; the money awarded will be paid to the successful candidate.

Application

The program is open to all members of the German Society of Endocrinology who are under the age of 35 in the year of the award. The application should include:

  1. Full name, address, date of birth and brief curriculum vitae of the applicant.
  2. Informal proof of current membership in the German Society of Endocrinology.
  3. List of publications by applicant as first or co-author.
  4. Date and nature of appointment held by applicant, with a brief summary of work on which currently employed.
  5. A statement providing details, why the applicant is interested in working on the project proposed by the host institute.
  6. A letter of commitment from the head of the clinic / institution on which the applicant is currently employed.

Upon completion of the fellowship, the recipient is requested to submit a final report to the German Society of Endocrinology.

Selection and Notification

The applications will be evaluated by a Jury. The Jury´s decision is binding for all participants. The Jury is made up of the President and the two Vice-Presidents of the German Society of Endocrinology, one representative of the host institute and one representative of Pfizer GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany. The Chairman of the Jury is the President of the German Society of Endocrinology. The decision of the Jury requires a majority of votes. The opinions of absent members of the Jury may be given in the form of a written statement. A Jury member is not allowed to participate in the evaluation of an application of an investigator originating from his own sphere of activity. In this case, the Chairman of the Jury may nominate another member of the Society.

Applicants will be notified by mail of the result of the evaluation after February 15, 2007. The prize will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the German Society of Endocrinology in March 2007.

The Endocrinology Division of the Department of Medicine of the University of Santiago de Compostela is located in the most important hospital of the Galicia community, which is one of the Spanish leading clinical centres. The Division is a centre of reference for the diagnosis and treatment of endocrine disorders. It concentrates the greatest experience and ability in the formation of professionals, both medical and researcher personnel, covering basic and clinical disciplines. The Division undertakes leading research in clinical and basic endocrinology, making an excellent contribution to the understanding of important health issues, in particular endocrine diseases related to GH and eating disorders.

The Division encompasses the biochemical and clinical research activities of several groups of the Eating Disorders Unit and the Laboratory of Molecular Endocrinology. Their assignments are:

  • To achieve further insight into the complex cellular interactions involving hormones, growth factors and lipids that is associated with both normal and pathological endocrine processes.
  • To apply this information in the development of new methods to diagnostics, treatment and prevention.
  • To assist the training of PhD students and post-docs in the discipline of the Endocrinology Science.

The Division maintains 2 major research programs which are available for the winner of the German Pfizer Young Investigator's Fellowship 2007:

  • Cellular and molecular endocrinology: physiology of somatotrope axe and energetic homeostasis
