Statuten / Statutes

The Ernst and Berta Scharrer Prize is endowed by Lilly Deutschland, Bad Homburg, to promote scientific work in the field of neuroendocrinology. In the historical terms, neuroendocrinology developed as a fringe area of endocrinology and neurology. Ernst and Berta Scharrer´s work significantly contributed to making neuroendocrinology an experimental and clinical science. The idea that neurohypophyseal hormones are formed in neurosecretory cells of hypothalamic core was introduced. The concept of the neuroendocrine axis was formulated, and this initiated the identification of neurohumoral signals.

1. The Ernst and Berta Scharrer Prize is annually awarded by Lilly Deutschland, Bad Homburg, to grant scientific and financial assistance to endocrinologists. The prize is worth EUR 10.000 (ten thousand) and is awarded for outstanding original studies in the field of neuroendocrinology. In exceptional cases, the Jury may decide to divide the award. The prize has been awarded since 1999.

2. Applicants who
- have performed their investigation submitted for the price at an European scientific institution,
- are working at an European scientific institution at the time of submission and
- are not older than 40 years at the time of submission
are invited to submit either one printed copy of their manuscript together with a curriculum vitae and a list of publications to the Office of the German Society of Endocrinology (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Endokrinologie) at the above address, or preferentially electronically as a word- or PDF-file to dge@endokrinologie.net. The closing date of the application for the following year's award is November 30th.

3. Both clinical and preclinical manuscripts from the different fields of neuroendocrinology are eligible. The submitted paper must be type-written with 30 lines a page and must not exceed 25 pages in length. Figures and tables should account for no more than one third of the entire paper. The manuscript must be written in English and conform to the guidelines of a scientific journal. Copyright remains with the author(s) of the work.

4. The number of authors of the prize-winning paper must not exceed two. In the event that more than two persons have collaborated, the members of the team should decide which two of the main authors should be named in the award-winning paper. In this case, written consent has to be obtained from the remaining members of the group (for example, if the paper is submitted for publication to a journal after it has been forwarded for publication as the prize-winning paper). Every submitted paper has to be accompanied by the curriculum vitae of the author(s) with detailed information of the scientific career(s). The author(s) must provide written confirmation that the manuscript, at the time of submission,
- has not been submitted, accepted for publication or published elsewhere (except previously published abstracts) before submission for the Ernst and Berta Scharrer Prize,
- has not been submitted for an other prize awarded from the German Society of Endocrinology and
- that the manuscript or parts have not been previously awarded with another scientific prize.

5. A Jury decides on how the prize is to be awarded. The Jury may decide not to award the prize if no paper of prize-winning standard has been received. The Jury's decision is binding for all participants and cannot be reconsidered by a court of law.

6. The Jury is made up of the Speaker and the members of the Advisory Board of the Neuroendocrinology Section of the German Society of Endocrinology and one representative of Lilly Deutschland, Bad Homburg. Other experts (without the right to vote) may be called upon to evaluate the papers. The Chairman of the Jury is the Speaker of the Neuroendocrinology Section of the German Society of Endocrinology.

7. The decision of the Jury requires a majority of votes. In exceptional cases, the opinions of absent members of the Jury may be given in the form of a written statement. A Jury member is not allowed to participate in the evaluation of a paper originating from his own sphere of activity. In this case, the Speaker may nominate another member of the Society from the same special field to serve on the Jury.

8. The prize will be awarded at the Annual Meeting of the German Society of Endocrinology.

9. On this occasion the Speaker of the Section will call for the submission of papers to be considered for next year's prize. He will also arrange for an adequate announcement of the competition in international specialized medical journals.

10. The awardee(s) will be invited by the German Society of Endocrinology to present their work at the Annual Meeting of the Neuroendocrinology Section of the German Society of Endocrinology.
